Children Evacuations
About Fear that the German bombings would cause countless civilian deaths, the British government decided to evacuate mothers, children, and infants from towns and cities to rural locations considered to be safe. Evacuations took place in waves and were voluntary. Although hesitant to send their children away to live with strangers, fear of bombings, closure of many urban schools, and organized transportation of school groups all persuaded parents that it was in the best interest of their children's safety to be evacuated.
